Why Is My Pool Water Cloudy? 7 Causes and Fixes for Orlando Pools

Cloudy pool water is the most common complaint we hear in East Orlando, and it's almost always one of seven causes.

The Quick Diagnostic

  • High pH (above 7.8) — the #1 cause in Central Florida
  • High calcium hardness — common on well water
  • Dirty filter — 8+ psi above baseline
  • Early algae bloom — cloudiness with a green tint
  • Low chlorine — under 1 ppm free chlorine
  • High cyanuric acid — above 80 ppm
  • Post-storm dilution — heavy rain drops pH and chlorine

The 7 Causes of Cloudy Water

1. High pH

Above 7.8, calcium starts precipitating out of solution — the pool looks milky.

2. High Calcium Hardness

Above 400 ppm, calcium clouds the water and scales the tile and heater.

3. Dirty or Undersized Filter

A clogged filter can't remove the fine particles that make water cloudy.

4. Early Algae

Cloudy with a green tint is algae in the earliest stage.

5. Low Free Chlorine

Under 1 ppm, organic material accumulates and the pool clouds.

6. High Cyanuric Acid (CYA)

Above 80 ppm, chlorine is present but chemically "locked" and doesn't sanitize.

7. Post-Storm Dilution

Heavy Orlando thunderstorms dilute chlorine and drop pH.

Pro Tip
If your chlorine is high but the pool is cloudy, don't add more chlorine.

How to Fix Each One

  • High pH: Add muriatic acid or dry acid to bring pH to 7.4
  • High calcium: Partial drain and refill
  • Dirty filter: See pool filter cleaning
  • Early algae: Shock with cal-hypo, brush, run pump 24/7 for 48 hours
  • Low chlorine: Shock to 10 ppm, then maintain 2–4 ppm
  • High CYA: Partial drain and refill
  • Post-storm: Rebalance pH and alkalinity, then shock
Watch Out
Never mix acid and shock in the same 30-minute window.

How to Keep It Clear

  • Test 2–3 times a week
  • Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.6
  • Keep free chlorine between 2 and 4 ppm
  • Keep cyanuric acid between 30 and 50 ppm
  • Clean the filter on schedule
  • Consider consistent weekly pool service
